Supportive Periodontal Therapy

What is Supportive Periodontal Therapy?Periodontal Disease is similar to other chronic diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension. These are not infectious disorders; they are chronic and not curable, but very controllable.

The key to control is early diagnosis and treatment followed by ongoing Supportive Periodontal Therapy (SPT) very 3-4 months for life~~the life of the patient or the life of the dentition. This is not an arbitrary interval. When the biofilm is forming the early bacteria cannot cause periodontal disease. If this biofilm is not removed pathogens attach and grow within 3 months. That is when we want to get them, not later.

Periodontal patients cannot postpone maintenance if they want to successfully manage the progression of their disease.
